GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

The discipline of optimizing for visibility in generative AI search results across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and similar tools.

Generative Engine Optimization is the broader umbrella for tactics that improve a site's chance of being retrieved and cited by generative AI engines. It includes content design, schema, llms.txt, citation building, and entity disambiguation.

GEO is sometimes used interchangeably with AEO. The distinction in practice: AEO emphasizes the answer-engine context, GEO emphasizes the broader generative ecosystem including longer-form retrieval-augmented generation tools.
